Barbara Coleman

Bishop Barbara Coleman, D. Min. was born November 17, 1957 in Tallulah, Louisiana to Fulton Garrett Sr. and Mary Garrett (Smith). She was born with Gods hand on her life. Even as a child, Barbara enjoyed acts of service, which would become the roadmap for her entire life. She later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada with her family where she resided until God called her home. She attended Ed W Clark High School where her quest for higher education was sparked. She received her diploma on June 4, 1970. Following graduation she met and married Leroy Coleman. That union blessed them with a son, Taylor Coleman. Barbara sought and procured employment with The Clark County Library District. There her life’s work began, in combination with her commitment to our Lord and Savior. She began a tireless pursuit of educational excellence and faithful service to God, family, and her community. She earned a Certificate of Achievement in Child Development from CSN in 1989, and Associate of Applied Science in Child Development from CSN in 1992, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from UNLV in 1996, an Award of Appreciation from Diversity in the Desert: The African-American Experience in Las Vegas in 2008, and an Doctor of Ministry from Next Dimension University in 2013. Barbara’s unparalleled work ethic and dedication over the years propelled her to Assistant Branch Manager of The West Las Vegas Library. During her tenure she garnered national attention for her relentless dedication to compelling and African American Special Collection from 1999-2009. Throughout her career Barbara was presented with numerous awards, achievements, and accolades she was well deserving of. She maintained a delicate balance between home, church, and community. Barbara was a steadfast member of Grace Immanuel Baptist Church under Reverend S.P. Parks. She cherished her time encouraging the youth. Spending never ending hours coordinating youth programs, Bible school, and community outreach events. Eventually moving on to a new church home, Pleasant Grove under Pastor Cherry. Barbara continued her hearts joy, serving in God’s house. Barbara’s life was spent giving her time, talents, resources, and most of all her heart. She never tired of her mission and commitment to generosity, acts of service, and kindness. She was the definition of a good and faithful servant, touching each person’s life she impacted like none other. Barbara was preceded in death by her father Fulton Garrett Sr., mother Mary Garrett (Smith), brother Johnnie Garrett, brother Fulton Garrett Jr., sister Carolyn Shelton, brother Michael Garrett, and nephew Anthony Shelton. Leaving to celebrate her home going are son Taylor Coleman, sister Patricia Garrett (Alonzo), nephew Alan Shelton (Wendy), nephew Ronnie Hoye, nephew Lawrence Weekly (Kim), great-niece Riley Hoye, brother-in-law Curtis Shelton, God-daughters Sara Johnson and E’Shann Brogden Wright of North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, additional family members, friends, and loved ones.
