Born on October 10, 1929, in Ancon, Panama City, Panama, Raphael’s life spanned nearly a century—a remarkable journey through some of the most defining moments in modern history. He witnessed a world transformed before his eyes, from the hardships of the Great Depression to the technological age of smartphones and artificial intelligence. During his lifetime, Raphael lived through World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the conflicts that shaped the modern world. He witnessed the rise and fall of nations, the landing of man on the moon, the construction and evolution of the Panama Canal Zone, and the transition of Panama through profound political and social change. As a young man in Panama, Raphael experienced a world divided by segregation and inequality. He lived through eras when opportunities were not equally shared and watched as courageous men and women fought for civil rights, dignity, and justice. He witnessed the leadership of countless presidents and world leaders, the historic presidency of John F. Kennedy, the inspiring work and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the social movements that forever changed the course of history. Yet despite all the events that unfolded around him, Raphael remained grounded in the values that mattered most: faith, family, hard work, and love. He built a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. Raphael was a commercial tuna fisherman and skilled mechanic whose hands were rarely idle and whose work ethic was admired by all who knew him. He understood the value of hard work, honesty, and sacrifice, and he carried those values throughout his life. A devoted Catholic, Raphael’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He often reminded his family to stay close to God, trust in His guidance, and remember that every problem has a solution. His wisdom was simple yet powerful, and his words continue to guide those he loved. For more than 55 years, Raphael shared a beautiful marriage with the love of his life, Olga Maria Rhino. Together they built a family rooted in faith, love, resilience, and commitment. Their marriage stood as a testament to loyalty, devotion, and the enduring power of love. To his children and grandchildren, Raphael was much more than a father and grandfather. He was a storyteller. As children, we would gather around him and listen to tales of his days at sea. His fishing adventures sparked our imaginations and transported us to worlds that felt like scenes from a pirate story. Through his words, the ocean came alive, and those stories became treasured memories that remain with us today. Through those stories, he passed down a sense of adventure, courage, and possibility. Anyone who knew Raphael will remember his contagious laughter. His smile could light up a room, and his warm spirit and sense of humor brought joy to family gatherings and everyday moments alike. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, loved, and important. Above all, Raphael loved his family unconditionally. His greatest pride was not found in his work or accomplishments, but in the family he helped build and the lives he touched. His love, guidance, and example will continue to live on through each of them. Raphael is lovingly survived by his devoted wife of more than sixty years, Olga Maria Rhino; his children, Isaac Raphael Rhino, Raphael Paulin Rhino II and wife Cheri Rhino, Michael Betts and wife Toshiko Betts, and Eric Betts; and his cherished grandchildren, Josephine Rhino, Jordyn Rhino, Raphael Paulin Rhino III, Benjamin Ramin Rhino, Victor Betts, Marvin Betts, James Betts, Cameron Betts, Mike Betts Jr., Jordyn Betts, Erica, Mandy, Darleen, Alexis, Mayla, Logan, and Elia. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who were blessed to know and love him. While our hearts mourn his absence, we find comfort in knowing that this is not goodbye. It is simply “until we meet again.” We take solace in the faith he taught us and in the knowledge that he now rests peacefully in the presence of the Lord.
